The city is located on the Adriatic coast 42 km north of Bari, at an altitude of 7 meters above sea level. A small natural inlet, generated in ancient times by the mouth of a river that has now disappeared, corresponds to the city port. The territory is mainly flat, although it falls in the extreme northern portion of the Lower Murgia of Bari, characterized by a series of terraces, whose maximum altitude is reached at the Sant’Elia morning (about 200 meters above sea level), which slope down towards the coast. The entire territory is crossed by numerous blades, among which the most important is Lama Paterno, which marks the border with the municipality of Bisceglie.
